Ahhh!  I didn't think my next gastronomic experience would be on a blue Monday but lo and behold I have another experience to share.  After school I was supposed to meet a friend at Stella's for drinks, and while waiting for the friend I tried a Cherry beer from Belgium.  It was so delicious!  Creamy at first, then fruity and a little sour in the aftertaste.  Mmm...This is the first time I encountered a fruity beer and I'll be sure to go back for more.  The beer is called Belle-Vue Kriek and goes for about $6 at Stella's; too bad I didn't have enough time or I would have had 1/2 lb of mussels to go with it.  I think I'm in a dilemna as to which is closer to gastronomic paradise:  a slice of cherry cheesecake and a latte or cherry beer and 1/2 lb of mussles.

Speaking of lattes, I tried Starbuck's Pumpkin Spice Latte and really liked it.  It's just as good as the Toffee Nut Latte they promoted last year.  I'm not a huge fan of Starbucks but I wished other coffee shops were as...creative (?) when it comes to flavoured coffees.  Any recommendations from skeptics like me?

After the Cherry beer, I met Cuong to try an Ethiopian Restaurant (Harambe) on the Drive.  What an experience!  It was the first time I ate with my hands and I loved it.  (Eating finger food does not count because it's just too neat).  We ordered the Chef's platter which consisted of a huge platter of stews, sauces, dips, and naan-like bread.  I can only compare the set-up to East Indian food.  For instance, in the Chutney Villa they would bring out a big platter of naan bread with an assortment of chutney and curry in little bowls so you can dip the naan.  At first, Cuong wanted to grab a spoon but we didn't want to be one of those "un-cool" people who didn't get into the groove of things.  It's kind of like eating Chinese noodles with a fork but I loved getting my hands into it plus, it really isn't as gross as our parents make it.  Definitely a good place to try for adventurous dining.

- quando, quando

Can you believe this rain?  It a step closer to September reality.  Yep, gloomy days when you get off work or school and have to brave the weather home.  On the flip side, there's the crisp weather and the hope of cozy sweaters.  There's always a sense of excitement to the weeks leading up to September: back to school shopping, school supply shopping, back to school grocery shopping.  I remember buying a really nice sweater in August and wished it was cooler so I could wear it but really my vanity would get the better of me when I wore it in September's Indian Summer.

The ultimate season is starting to wind down with less and less practices, games, and tournaments.  Counting last weekend's 24 hour ulty tournament for Alzheimers, I will be in three ulty tournaments right up until the long weekend.  Gosh, ultimate is really taking up a big chunk of my summer but I really don't mind because I meet so many great people.  The 24hr tourney was fun; it was pretty weird playing at UBC 2am in the morning and sweating at night.  Our 2am game was hilarious because almost everyone got so drunk that they couldn't run or catch properly.

If I weren't having my birthday at Section (3) it would definitely be at Stella's Belgium tapas restaurant on Commercial.  This place rocks.  It's modern and clean too, (none of that gross bathroom restaurant syndrome).  Even though it is a tapas bar, the portion sizes are double of Bin 941, (and cheap too).  Cuong had an Ahi tuna pannini with baby greens and I had a calamari sandwich with fries and the bill came up to $20-ish dollars.  I would have to agree with the food critics that their range of Belgium beers is pretty impressive.  A woman next to me had cherry flavoured beer, how cool is that!?

Another great gastronomic discovery is the Kiwi Pie Company on Robson and Granville.  Yum!  We bought a mixed berry (rasperry, pears?, blueberry) pie for about $10, (normally it would cost more but a slice was already taken).  Let me tell you, the crust is heavenly!  When eating any kind of pie the crust is so important!  The bottom of the pie had the right doughy texture without being too chewy or raw and the top was crusty with a nice glaze on top.  You know when you buy the Superstore or Safeway pies and the apple filling tastes so so sweet?  Well, Kiwi Pie's filling was sweet but in my opinion it was just right.  And of course it didn't take long for all three slices to be gone in 20 minutes!

Is anybody's U-pass not working?
